Hi Jo,

1. Patent rights

We have done our best not to infringe the patents which are specifically mentioned in the JVM spec. There may of course be other patents Out There belonging to Oracle or anyone else which we unknowingly violate. This of course is true for any software (open source or proprietary), and all I can say is that if a patent holder brings an infringement to our attention we will look into non-infringing alternatives.

2. Copyright

We haven't taken any implementation code from Oracle, so this boils down to the question of whether the APIs are protected by copyright. Many people think they are not, but Oracle wins against Google then it could become impossible to use Mika in the US. Obviously we hope they don't win.

The crash is caused by heap corruption, which can be a b****r to track down. Some ideas:

Go into core-vm/src/vm/ts-mem.c and change the definition of check_limit to something much lower, even just 1. Compile Mika with -DDEBUG=true; it will run slow as a dog, but it will detect any heap corruption.
Take a look at vm-cmp/awt/rudolph/hal/pixels/c555/pixel.h (or c565, whichever color model you are using) and see if you can introduce some extra bounds checking etc..

Normally 16-bit should be quite stable, it has been used quite a lot in the past.

Looks like your Mika version is quite old, what does mika -version say?

Thread_start0 290 means line 20 of the C function Thread_start0, which is in core-vm/src/native/java/lang/Thread.c and which corresponds to the private native method start0 in core-vm/java/java/lang/Thread.java. This function calls x_thread_create, which in turn calls pthread_create, and that is returning ENOMEM.

This tends to happen if you create a lot of threads, even if they are short-lived; mika is very conservative about garbage-collecting the underlying pthread objects, because really nasty things happen if we would release the memory of a thread which is not quite dead. To deal with this we added the possibility to re-cycle pthreads which you can enable by compiling mika with -DJAM.ENABLE_THREAD_RECYCLING=true on the command line, or by adding the line
ENABLE_THREAD_RECYCLING = true ;
to your Configuration/platform file.

For this to work your sources need to be at least rev. 1189. This feature is not enabled by default because it was considered to be "experimental", but it's probably time to make it the default.
